Camp Wanocksett is at the foot of Mt. Monadnock,
on Thorndike Pond (actually a very large lake).

Arrival at Camp: 2 PM Sunday -
First timers should probably park in the main arrival area, and walk around a
bit to get a sense of the layout. Officially, find a parking space somewhere at
the main camp arrival area. They want you to bring all your gear (usually
in a steamer trunk) and place it in a certain bay (look for our campsite
name IROQUOIS on a sign in the big Memorial Lodge garage bays)...then a
pickup truck comes and delivers it up to our camp site, named IROQUOIS,
about an hour later. No carrying stuff up by yourself. (2005 and 2006 we carried
our gear in, we are likely to carry our own gear in again in 2007 - less
stuff gets lost this way and the boys win an award for doing this.)
Pickup from Camp: Saturday morning at @ 10 - 11 AM
Sleeping at Camp: The boys sleep in canvas tents, on wooden platforms, 2 boys to a tent. Each tent
has an old steel bed frame and mattress. Trunks usually go at the end of the
tent, often they are too high to go under the bed.
Please note that we encourage the boys to have mosquito netting for their beds,
it is not on the official BSA camp list, but we added it to the website camp
checklist. Bring 4 dowels, 1/2 to 5/8 inch diameter, cut to 40 inches length.
The mosquito netting fits over the camp bed, and unfolds to a canopy like shape
(inverted) that then rests on the dowels, which get duct-taped to the bed posts.
This bed-netting can usually be purchased at the Outdoor Store in Maynard
(downtown, on Nason St. opposite Fleet Bank), and sometimes at the Wanocksett
camp store (but if they are out, it's too late!). Wal-Mart back in Rindge MIGHT
have it???
(NB: You can also try Camp Resolute's Scout Shop, and the NVC Scout Shop.)
Parents note: Hiking boots must be purchased well in advance of camp, and must be broken in.
Do not send your child to camp with a brand new pair of hiking boots. Serious
foot blisters will result if boots are not broken in.
The Family Barbeque: This takes place on Wednesday evening, beginning at 6PM.
It features a muster of all the troops, taking down the colors, a "lovely" BBQ
dinner - you can bring your own dinner, a campfire with songs and skits and the
Order of the Arrow callout.
*** For parents of new scouts - if you expect to
arrive late for the BBQ you might want to consider conveying this information to your son so
he won't be upset when everyone else's parents arrive and his don't. You'd be
surprised how much this matters to the boys.***
